Alton Towers Resort
London doesn’t have a theme park inside the city, but the M25 belt has four big attractions, and three of them are Merlin Entertainments theme parks. That matters for your wallet: a Merlin annual pass covers Thorpe Park, Chessington, LEGOLAND Windsor and Alton Towers, and can beat day tickets if you visit two or more in a year. The fourth, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour near Watford, isn’t a theme park at all but competes for the same day of your trip.
Every one is reachable by train from a London terminus, which beats sitting on the M25.

The parks
Warner Bros. Studio Tour London
The Harry Potter Studio Tour is a walk through the real sets, props and costumes at Leavesden Studios, where all eight films were shot. You’ll see the Great Hall, Diagon Alley, Platform 9¾ with the Hogwarts Express, and the scale model of Hogwarts at the end. There are no rides. Tickets are timed and must be booked in advance. Allow 3–4 hours inside.
Thorpe Park
Thorpe Park is the UK’s dedicated thrill park, on a lakeside site in Chertsey. Hyperia, opened in 2024, is the UK’s tallest and fastest coaster. Stealth launches from 0 to 80 mph in under two seconds, Colossus was the world’s first ten-inversion coaster, and The Swarm and Saw – The Ride complete the set. There’s little for small children here.
Chessington World of Adventures
Chessington is three attractions behind one gate: a family theme park, a zoo with tigers, gorillas and sea lions, and a SEA LIFE aquarium. World of Jumanji’s Mandrill Mayhem is a good first big coaster for confident kids, and Vampire has been swinging over the trees since 1990. It’s the easiest of the four to reach without a car.
LEGOLAND Windsor
LEGOLAND Windsor is built entirely for children. Flight of the Sky Lion in LEGO Mythica is a flying theatre, NINJAGO The Ride is an interactive dark ride, and The Dragon is most kids’ first proper coaster. Miniland’s brick-built London is the part adults linger over.
Alton Towers: the long day trip
Alton Towers is the UK’s biggest park, with The Smiler, Nemesis Reborn, Oblivion, Wicker Man and CBeebies Land for small children, but it’s in rural Staffordshire, roughly 3–3.5 hours from London by car. Doing it there and back in one day means seven hours on the road for one day in the park. Book a night nearby or make it a two-day break.
A one-day plan
For a family based in central London with children aged 5–12:
- 08:30: train from Waterloo to Chessington South, then walk to the gates for opening.
- Morning: World of Jumanji and Vampire first, before queues build.
- 12:00–15:00: the zoo and SEA LIFE while ride queues peak. The animal areas stay calm.
- Late afternoon: a second ride session, then the direct train back.
For teenagers, run the same plan at Thorpe Park: Hyperia and Stealth at opening, flat rides and lunch at midday, then coaster re-rides in the last two hours.
If you only have time for one
- Children under 10: LEGOLAND Windsor.
- Mixed ages 4–14: Chessington, where the zoo keeps everyone busy between rides.
- Teens and adults: Thorpe Park.
- Fans, rain forecast, or out of season: the Harry Potter Studio Tour. It’s indoors and open almost all year.
Seasons and timing
- Season: Thorpe Park, Chessington and LEGOLAND Windsor open from roughly March to early November. LEGOLAND adds Christmas events, and the Studio Tour opens almost all year, with Hogwarts in the Snow running from about November to January.
- Quietest days: term-time weekdays in May, June and September. UK school holidays and sunny weekends are the crunch.
- October: Thorpe Park’s Fright Nights and LEGOLAND’s family-friendly Brick or Treat sell out on peak evenings. Book dated tickets early.
- Heathrow: Thorpe Park and LEGOLAND are close enough to the airport for a first- or last-day visit if you leave a time buffer.
