Inside Oltremare: what you’re paying for
Oltremare sits on the inland edge of Riccione, right next to Aquafan, and is run by Costa Edutainment, the group behind Italia in Miniatura and the Genoa aquarium. It’s neither an aquarium nor a ride park. Think of it as an outdoor family edutainment park: animal meetings led by trainers, landscaped habitats and, since the “Oltremare 2.0” relaunch, a set of indoor walk-through experiences about the origins of the universe and of humans.
What your ticket covers:
- Dolphins World — the park’s centrepiece, a lagoon for bottlenose dolphins with meetings twice a day (recently 11:40 and 16:45). Trainers explain the animals’ biology, behaviour and the research projects the park is part of. A lower level covers the evolution of cetaceans.
- Raptors World — free-flight sessions with birds of prey, the Owl Mill and a falconry area.
- Parrots World — macaws and other tropical parrots flying over the audience (April to September only).
- Genesis — a four-room 5D journey from the Big Bang to the last Ice Age, with 3D and multisensory effects.
- Planet Theatre, Sapiens, Speleos and Village — a 3D film, a forest of prehistoric humans and extinct megafauna, a cave you explore like a speleologist, and a recreated lake-dwelling settlement.
- Discovery Delta — a walk through a recreated river-delta habitat, with traditional casoni huts, a sturgeon pond and birdwatching.
- MegaGame Land — a 300 m² life-size board game themed on the YouTubers DinsiemE (Erick and Dominick), a big draw for Italian children.
Smaller children also get Ulisse’s Island (rope bridges, boats and water cannons), the Farm and the Kronosaurus fossil dig. Canoe Adventure, the Pony’s Area and the Adventure Park cost extra.
Who suits it? Families with children from about 3 to 12, school-age animal fans and grandparents. There are no thrill rides — older teens are happier at Mirabilandia or on the slides next door.
Timing is everything
- Season: daily from early April to mid-September (closed on several Mondays in April and May), typically 10:00–18:00. After that come a few September weekends, autumn Sundays, Halloween, early December and the Christmas holidays until 6 January.
- Winter visits: Ulisse’s Island, the Pony’s Area, Canoe Adventure, Alien Invasion and the Adventure Park close. Parrots World is replaced by a barn owl exhibit, so the warm season shows the park at its fullest.
- MegaGame Land: open only at weekends in spring, then daily from 1 June, from midday to closing. If your children are DinsiemE fans, avoid spring weekdays.
- Busiest: July and August, especially on overcast beach days when the whole Riviera looks for something else to do.
- Plan around the meetings. Pick up the daily programme at the entrance and build your route around the dolphin session times, with raptors and parrots in between. Do the indoor areas — Genesis, Planet Theatre and Sapiens — in the midday heat.
Insider tip: Genesis and Planet Theatre use loud noises and special effects. If a small child doesn’t want to go in, use the park’s swap system: one adult waits at the entrance with the child while the others go in, then swaps in without queuing again.
How to save on tickets
- Buy online. The official online adult rate is €23 against €27 at the gate. Children 100–140 cm and over-65s pay €21. GetYourGuide sells entry from €27 — useful if you’re already booking other Riviera activities there.
- Under 1 metre is free. Visitors with certified 100% disability also enter free, and their companion pays the reduced rate.
- Come back for €5. Before you leave, buy the second-day ticket: it lets you return on any other open day that season.
- Combine with sister parks. Combos cover Aquafan (€47), Italia in Miniatura (€43) or the Acquario di Cattolica (€42). Each is valid all season and can be split across days.
- Bring a picnic. There’s a shaded picnic area with tables in Discovery Delta, and you can get back in after leaving with a hand stamp.
- Mobility help is free. Electric scooters are lent free to over-65s and visitors with limited mobility, and pushchairs rent for €5 a day.
Practical details before you go
- Language: the animal meetings are in Italian. Scan the QR code on the daily programme to hear the Dolphins World, Raptors World and Parrots World presentations in English, German, French or Spanish. Audio guides for each area come in the same languages.
- Interactive programmes: the Dolphin Experience, Training Experience and Raptors Experience let you work alongside the trainers or falconers. They run on a weekly schedule, cost extra and must be booked in advance on the official site.
- Food: outlets include Caffè Pascucci, Osteria del Pesce, La Piadineria, Hot DOC and Capperi, which sells certified gluten-free products. Opening hours depend on the season and how busy the park is.
- With a baby: there’s a baby room for changing, feeding and warming food behind Dolphins World. Nappies and bottles are sold in the shops.
- Lockers cost €1 each time you open them, so pack what you need for the whole day in one go and leave them shut.
- Dogs are welcome on a lead, but large dogs can’t go on the boats at Ulisse’s Island.
Getting there without the hassle
Oltremare is at Via Ascoli Piceno 6, 47838 Riccione — the same address as Aquafan, beside the A14 toll booth:
- By car: leave the A14 at Riccione and set “Parking Oltremare” in your navigation. From the seafront, follow the A14 or Oltremare signs.
- By bus: line 58 runs from Riccione station and the seafront to the Aquafan–Oltremare stop (€1.50). From Rimini take trolleybus line 11 to Piazzale Curiel in Riccione and change to the 58. From Cattolica or Misano take the 125 and change at the same place.
- By train: Riccione station is on the Bologna–Ancona coastal line. Bologna is about 1–1.5 hours away by train or car.
Accessibility is good: all areas except Ulisse’s Island and Speleos are wheelchair-accessible, and a lift serves the park’s three levels.
Make it a trip
- Aquafan next door is the obvious pairing in summer, and the €47 combo can be split over two days.
- Italia in Miniatura at Viserba di Rimini works for a second family day — it’s also open on most of Oltremare’s winter dates.
- Mirabilandia near Ravenna adds coasters for older children.
The Adriatic Riviera theme parks guide compares every option on the coast, and more aquariums and animal parks are on the zoos and aquariums hub.
